Follow Ronja Rövardotter trail – visit Glupafallet or Ristafallet
Where is Ristafallet?
Ristafallet is one of Sweden’s largest, most powerful and most beautiful waterfalls and is located in Hålland in Undersåkers parish between Järpen and Åre in western Jämtland, just a few kilometers from the E14. The case that is part of Indalsälven< /a> is easily accessible at Ristafallets Camping. Paid parking is available at the cafe, then walk through the camping area to Ristafallet and follow the path down along the fall.
Wet facts about the Rista case
Elevation above sea level: 355 meters
Width: 50 meters
Drop height: < span style="font-weight: 400;">14 meters
Flow: between 100 and 400 m³/s, depending on the season
The whole area has the shape of a giant corpse amphitheatre, and a secluded, wooded island divides the falls into two parts, the northern and the the southern part, which contributes to the dramatic appearance of the case. The island screens off the halves of the falls, so that the northern half cannot be seen from the southern shore and vice versa. On the island there is a cave that can be visited in winter when the waterfall is frozen.
Was Ronja Rövardotter included in the Ristafallet?
No, not the whole movie, but a couple of scenes from the movie Ronja Rövardotter were shot here.
Astrid Lindgren’s< /a> film Ronja Rövardotter was recorded from August 1983 to June 1984 in several different locations: Jämtland, Dalsland< /span>, < span style="font-weight: 400;">Bohuslän, Scania, < /span>Stockholm, Oslo .
When Tage Danielsson was looking for environments for the recording of he chose Ristafallet to portray the thundering “Glupafallet” and it is here that Ronja makes his famous Vårskrik.
Even the film sequences where Ronja and Birk float downstream holding onto a birch were filmed at Ristafallet, downstream in the river. Downstream of the fall, the scene was recorded where Birk and Ronja save themselves stuck in a birch and finally make it to the shore again.
The Glupa case
“Ronja and Birk live a wilderness life in Björngrottan. The summer is so hot that the forest steams and every day they bathe in the river. Together they overcome both wild winters and Glupafallet, and even tame horses. But what will happen when summer becomes autumn, and autumn becomes winter? Then they can no longer live in the cave, but they also cannot bear the thought of returning to Mattisborgen. At the same time, the bailiff’s jacks tighten the noose around the robbers, and both Mattis and Borka realize that they must cooperate – or perish. It draws together to a decisive encounter of wild beasts”. Ronja Rövardotter – The Glupafallet is the fourth and final comic book.

Tip: Do like Ronja Rövardotter and Birk – go riverboarding in Ristafallet!
Do like Ronja and Birk – go riverboarding in Ristafallet with a guide! The activity is physically demanding, which I can attest to. I’m very used to the water, but I still had a real “shut up” experience, there is no tougher activity to do in Åredalen than to join Ronja and Birk in the Ristafall. The river often gets over 20 degrees warm. The activity starts with warming up with a couple of slightly easier swims below Ristafallen but soon it gets tougher. You swim on both sides of the island that divides the waterfall, go down the rapids and stop in the backwater and really get to know the forces in the rapids, you swim, surf, jump off the rocks and walk behind a waterfall or two. The experience of walking behind mighty waterfalls alone is worth the entire tour. This tour is for those who really love water and enjoy close-to-nature experiences. span>

Fishing and wildlife around the falls
In Ristafallet’s humid environment, a special fauna thrives with special lichens, plants and animals. There are both otters and beavers in the area around Ristafallet. As they are shy animals, it is not often that you see them, but it may be possible to find traces of them. Remember to show consideration! Both upstream and downstream of the case there is sportfiske after above all trout, and downstream also harr.
Hiking trail along Ristafallet
Along the hiking trail on the northern riverbank downstream of Ristafallet is Olav’s spring, which is assumed to have gone out medieval pilgrims’ thirst on their journey to Olav the saint< /span> grave in Nidaros in Trondheim.
Below the fall and along the Indalsälven there is a trail system with viewpoints that allow you to get closer to the fall. Both the waterfall and the mixed forest around it are very old and unique, and the area is therefore a protected nature reserve, protected by Swedish law.
Ristafall round
The Ristafall round is an easy nature trail of about 10 kilometers where you get close to both the waterfall and the surrounding nature. The trail runs on both sides of the Indal River. It is especially beautiful in early summer when everything is in full green and in autumn when the leaves change color. If you want to walk the entire Ristafall round, you can follow the Pilgrimsleden to the west, where you get the chance to experience the quiet parts of the Älvdalen before turning back after about 4.5 km. It is easy to find and there are red marked wooden posts that show the way back to Ristafallet. Another tip along the way is to make a short trip to Prästfallet, which is a couple of hundred meters from Mobron.
Serving food and drink
Next to the waterfall is Ristafallet Camping & Café that serves homemade coffee and waffles. The campsite also has a playground with swings and a climbing frame.
